Study Design Overview

VCE Specialist Mathematics is the most demanding VCE mathematics subject, extending Mathematical Methods with complex numbers, advanced calculus, vectors, mechanics and mathematical proof. Co-enrolment with Mathematical Methods is compulsory. The subject is designed for students with strong mathematical ability who wish to pursue degrees in mathematics, engineering, computer science or physics. Units 1 and 2 explore combinatorics, number systems, geometry, discrete mathematics and logic. Units 3 and 4 cover complex numbers, vector calculus, differential equations, mechanics and statistical inference. Two VCAA examinations are held at year end: a technology-free Examination 1 and a CAS-active Examination 2. Specialist Mathematics significantly enhances ATAR prospects for capable students and is recognised by universities as a mark of mathematical excellence. Excelerate provides expert-curated practice questions and AI-powered explanations for every topic.

Co-enrolment in Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4) is compulsory for Specialist Mathematics Units 3 & 4.
