Study Design Overview

VCE Mathematical Methods develops knowledge of calculus, algebra, functions, probability and statistics for modelling real-world situations. It is one of the most popular and widely recognised VCE subjects, required for entry to many university science, engineering, economics and commerce programs. Units 1 and 2 build foundational skills in functions, graphs, introductory calculus, and probability, while Units 3 and 4 extend into differential and integral calculus, probability distributions and statistical inference. Two end-of-year examinations test students: a technology-free Examination 1 (40 marks) and a CAS-calculator-active Examination 2 (80 marks). The VCAA study design rewards thorough understanding of concepts alongside efficient use of CAS technology. Excelerate provides thousands of curriculum-aligned Mathematical Methods practice questions, AI-generated hints and progress tracking to help you reach the top study scores.
