Study Design Overview

VCE Legal Studies examines the principles, institutions and processes of the Australian and Victorian legal systems. Students analyse how laws are made, how the courts and parliament interact, how rights are protected, and how disputes are resolved. The subject develops skills in legal reasoning, case analysis and evaluating the effectiveness of the justice system. Units 1 and 2 introduce criminal and civil law, the court hierarchy and the role of parliament in law-making. Units 3 and 4 delve into the Charter of Human Rights, international human rights, civil dispute resolution mechanisms, parliamentary law-making processes and the doctrine of precedent. Legal Studies is assessed through SACs and a VCAA written examination. It provides excellent preparation for legal studies, criminology, social work and public policy degrees. Excelerate provides comprehensive practice questions covering all VCE Legal Studies topics with AI explanations.
