Study Design Overview

VCE Chemistry provides students with a deep understanding of the composition, structure and properties of materials and chemical processes. Studying Chemistry develops skills in experimental investigation, quantitative analysis and critical evaluation of evidence. Units 1 and 2 introduce the diversity of matter, chemical bonding, organic chemistry and aqueous systems. Units 3 and 4 extend into energy production, chemical equilibrium, optimising industrial processes, and rigorous chemical analysis including spectroscopy and chromatography. The subject is assessed through school-based coursework (SACs) and a VCAA written examination. Chemistry is foundational for further study in medicine, pharmacy, biochemistry, environmental science and engineering.
